Free Wood Chips (Single Grind) Available to Bismarck Citizens


Wood chips (single grind) are available for free, on a trial basis, at two designated grass collection sites in Bismarck for use by local homeowners.

Single Grind Wood Chips

  • Santa Fe Avenue & South 12th Street (Cottonwood Park parking lot) 
  • Ash Coulee Water Tower (NW corner of Ash Coulee Dr & N Washington St)

Wood chips produced by tree work performed by Forestry crews will be replenished as work load and work location allows. These wood chips are not for commercial use.

Commercial contractors and Bismarck residents may pick up free single grind woodchips from the landfill.   Please bring a shovel to load  your own wood chips.

  • Firewood will need to be cut and loaded by the customer.
  • There are two locations designated at the landfill for free firewood.
  • Stop by the scale and they will direct you to the sites.

Things To Know In Advance


  • The Bismarck Landfill is located at 2111 North 52nd Street, Bismarck ND 58501.
  • Stop at the Scale House before and after loading.
  • Provide the Scale House operator with the load capacity of your unit used for hauling.
  • Firewood and saw logs must be cut by the customer.
  • Customer must load the product themselves or
  • The Bismarck Landfill staff will load product for a fee of $80 for 4 loads in one day or $25 per single load (inform scale operator when entering the landfill).
  • Commercial or bulk buyers contact the landfill for instructions. 
  • Several different wood chip options are available: wood chipped, single ground, and double ground.
