Tank Permit Instructions

Tank permits are required anytime a new tank is being installed or an existing tank is being removed. Please read the “How To” information first before beginning to help reduce any problems in completing the application. Contact the Bismarck Fire Department at 701-355-1400 for more billing information if you have any questions or are a new contractor who does not have a password.

Flammable and Combustible Liquid Aboveground Tanks

  • Aboveground fuel tanks require a permit from the Bismarck Fire Department. IFC 105.6.8
  • The tank contractor and/or tank supplier are required to obtain the permit. The property/business owners will need to hire a flammable/combustible liquid tank contractor.
  • The tank contractor shall provide sufficient documentation and pay the application fee to ensure compliance with the fire code. No tanks shall be installed or delivered before the fire department issues a permit.
  • Aboveground tanks are restricted to MA, MB, A, or P-zoned districts within the City of Bismarck. The above-ground tank may not be located within 400 ft. of any residential zoned areas. IFC 5704.2.9.6.1
  • Above-ground tanks permanently connected to an appliance are regulated by Chapter 57 of the IFC and NFPA 30. For example, an aboveground tank connected to a generator.
  • Fuel Dispensing is more restrictive and regulated by Chapter 23 of the IFC and NFPA 30A.
  • Dispensing of Class-I flammable liquids such as Gasoline requires a UL 2085 tank. IFC 2306.2.3
  • Individual tank size, for all tanks, is limited to 12,000 gallons. IFC 2306.2.3
