The Bismarck Fire Department would like to remind everyone to stay safe and warm as the cold weather settles in. As temperatures drop, it is important to take precautions to prevent fires and carbon monoxide emergencies in your home.
Heating Safety
Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from space heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves.
Always turn off space heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.
Have your furnace and chimney inspected each year by a qualified professional.
Use only approved heating equipment, and never use an oven or grill to heat your home.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and near sleeping areas.
Never run vehicles, generators, or fuel-burning equipment inside garages or enclosed spaces.
If your alarm sounds, leave your home immediately and call 911.
Fire Safety
Test smoke alarms every month and replace the batteries if needed.
Keep fire extinguishers easily accessible and ensure everyone in your home knows how to use them.
Create and practice a home fire escape plan with your family.
