[ARCHIVED] PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Heating Safety Tips from the Bismarck Fire Department

As the chilly winter weather comes, the Bismarck Fire Department wants to ensure that you and your family stay warm and safe throughout the season.  Heating equipment is involved in 1 in every 6 home fires and 1 in every 5 home fire deaths. With a few simple safety tips and precautions, you can prevent most heating fires from happening.

  • Space heaters can be a great way to supplement warmth, but they come with their own set of precautions. Keep them at least three feet away from anything flammable, turn them off when unattended, and avoid using extension cords.

  • Furnace maintenance is important to make sure it's in good working condition. If repairs are needed be sure to use a trained qualified professional. Don't forget to replace filters regularly; this helps maintain efficiency and ensures cleaner air circulation.

  • Fireplaces create a great heat source, but they require proper maintenance. Schedule an annual chimney inspection and cleaning to prevent blockages. Always use a screen to keep sparks in check, and never leave a fire unattended.

Fuel-burning appliances like furnaces and water heaters need proper ventilation to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide (CO). Ensure that vents are clear and unobstructed. It's crucial to recognize the symptoms of CO poisoning, which include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. If you suspect

CO exposure, leave the home immediately, seek fresh air, and seek medical attention promptly.

If you have any questions, please contact the Bismarck Fire Department. Stay warm, stay safe, and let's make this winter season safe and enjoyable for everyone in our community.
