[ARCHIVED] Sandbag Output Up, Volunteers Still Needed

Volunteers have filled more than 18,000 sandbags at Bismarck’s three manned sandbag sites this afternoon.

Between 4:00pm and 5:00 pm, an estimated 18,370 sandbags were filled and given out to homeowners.

• Sandbag Central South – 4,100 sandbags
• Sandbag Central North – 8,600 sandbags
• Sandbag Charlie – 5,670 sandbags

“Those numbers are impressive, and we can credit them to the hard work of volunteers. But we still have millions of sandbags left to fill before Thursday,” says Bismarck Police Lt. Steve Kilde.

Right now wait times at the city’s manned sandbag sites are less than two hours, but Lt. Kilde says more volunteers could help shorten those wait times even more. There is a limit of 250 sandbags per vehicle, per trip.

Volunteers should report to one of the city’s three manned sites:
• Missouri Valley Fairgrounds (3805 E. Bismarck Expressway) - open 24 hours a day.
• Sandbag Central South Northern Plains Commerce Center (1901 Northern Plains Drive) - open 24 hours a day.
• Sandbag Charlie (521 South 22nd Street) – open 24 hours

Volunteers should bring a shovel and gloves. Volunteers must register before they begin filling sandbags. Parental consent is required for those under age 18. Consent forms are available at both Sandbag Central and Sandbag Central South.

Self-fill Sites are located at the following sites:
• Horizon Middle School (500 Ash Coulee Drive)
• Santa Fe Avenue, Cottonwood Complex west of South 12th Street
• Whispering Bay Subdivision, Shoreline Circle (daylight hours only)
• 48th Avenue and Sibley Drive (daylight hours only)
• Ponderosa Park (daylight hours only)
• Hogue Road (daylight hours only)
