The Bismarck Human Relations Committee honors Women's History Month with a free film screening of “Suffragette”. The public is invited to take part in the screening starring Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep. The film traces the Suffrage Movement and explores the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women's right to vote.
The event takes place Saturday, March 30, 10:30 a.m., at the Russell Reid Auditorium, North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum, 612 East Boulevard Ave., Bismarck. Dr. Barbara Handy-Marchello, a historian and writer for North Dakota Studies, will lead a general discussion with the audience following the 10:30 a.m. screening. Recurring film screenings will occur throughout the day at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The event is co-hosted by the Bismarck Human Relations Committee in partnership with the North Dakota Woman Suffrage Centennial Committee and State Historical Society of North Dakota. The North Dakota Woman Suffrage Centennial Committee is coordinating statewide activities through 2020 to mark the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote, and acknowledges the continuing struggle to include peoples of all racial, cultural and ethnic identities in our democracy.
The Bismarck Human Relations Committee seeks to make education a meaningful and visible strategy to recognize the value of a diverse community, and to promote acceptance and respect for diversity through educational programs and activities that discourage discrimination.
