The City of Bismarck Roads and Streets Department continue to apply sand to city streets to combat the slippery conditions. Salt brine water is added to the sand and salt crystals to allow it to melt ice below 18 degrees and the sand is used to help improve traction. When temperatures are below zero degrees, the salt water encapsulating the salt crystal doesn’t melt the ice and the sand is blown off the streets by vehicle traffic and the wind. The City has applied over 600 tons of sand since Tuesday, January 29th to Bismarck roads to provide traction and to grind off the ice.
Please drive with caution, slow down, and leave additional space between vehicles to allow for safe braking and unexpected actions.
Thank you for your cooperation.
