[ARCHIVED] Preventing Sewer Back-ups - What Not to Flush

The City of Bismarck needs your help in preventing sewer back-ups. Putting the wrong things down sinks and toilets can cause expensive plumbing problems in your home or business and also in the city sewer system.

Please do not flush paper towels, cleaning wipes, diapers, nursing pads, baby wipes, facial tissues, cat litter, condoms, feminine hygiene products, dental floss, hair and grease down the toilet. These products are resistant to degradation and hang up in your pipes and the city sewers or pumps. The label might say “flushable”, but disposable products are clogging our sewer pipes and damaging pumps and equipment. The toilet is only meant to flush human waste and toilet paper.

If a City sewer pipe clogs, it can lead to a sewer back-up in your neighborhood. Don’t flush trouble, save yourself and the city sewer department from a pain in the drain. Put disposable wipes, rags and towels in the trash, not the toilet!
