April 17, 2014 At 2:31 pm the Bismarck Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from an apartment building at 2018 East Avenue D.
Upon arrival, all occupants were evacuated from the building. Firefighters encountered light smoke outside a second story apartment. As they approached they found the door was warm to the touch. After gaining entry into the apartment the firefighters found a small fire in the kitchen and were able to extinguish it with a water extinguisher. The apartment unit had heavy fire and smoke damage in the kitchen and moderate smoke damage to the rest of the apartment.
No persons were in the involved apartment unit at the time of the fire. However a dog perished from smoke inhalation. One person was displaced by the fire but will be staying with friends.
Preliminary fire loss estimates are approximately $20,000. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and caused by items on the stove that was accidentally turned on.
