[ARCHIVED] Police Youth Bureau Offers New Services for Youths At-Risk

PYB News Services Draovitch Stugelmeyer

The Bismarck Police Bureau (PYB) announced new services for youths at-risk with evidence based classes and a new, interactive web page www.bismarck.org/pyb

The PYB now offers evidence-based classes. Several youth workers recently received training through the National Curriculum and Training Institute to become certified to teach classes on truancy, shoplifting, misdemeanor offenses and cognitive life skills. Youth Worker, Luke McKay said the classes are fast-paced and interactive and include both small groups and class exercises. The classes are designed to help youth understand that they have the personal power and ability to change the direction of their life.

Lt. Jason Stugelmeyer recently began as commander of Juvenile Services, which includes PYB and the school resource officer program. Stugelmeyer said that PYB is responsive to youths and parents and provides innovative services to the community. There are now four SRO’s working in Bismarck schools. That number will increase to six in August to accommodate school expansion. The SRO’s provide guidance that helps keep kids out of trouble.

PYB has been recognized by the Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Law Enforcement Accreditation as an exemplary Police/Youth Program. “PYB touches many people throughout the community through outreach, community events and crisis calls,” said Stugelmeyer.

Deputy Chief Draovitch said that the department wanted to make youth workers and school resource officers more accessible to the community. The newly updated PYB web page now includes contact information for youth workers, information about events, classes and information for parents about current trends and issues their kids may be experiencing.
