The NFPA and Bismarck Fire Department want to share three quick tips for this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme: Charge into Fire Safety – 3 Steps.
1. Buy safe products.
When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery, check for a safety mark like UL, ETL, or CSA. That way, you know it’s been tested to meet safety standards.
2. Charge the right way.
Stick with the charger and cord that came with your device, or buy replacements straight from the manufacturer. Charge on a hard surface, not on a bed or couch. And once it’s fully charged, unplug it or take the battery out—don’t let it overcharge.
3. Recycle batteries properly.
Never toss lithium-ion batteries in the trash or your regular recycling bin—they can start fires. Instead, drop them off at a safe recycling location. You can find one at call2recycle.org.
