[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Fire Department’s Back to School Fire Safety Tips

It’s back to school, families getting back to regular routines, changing leaves, and the beginning of cooler weather. This makes it the perfect transition time to make sure your residence is fire safe. The Bismarck Fire Department reminds residents of essential “Back to School” Safety Tips for the coming school year and all year round!

• Review/develop a home exit plan. Identify two routes of exit from each room in your house. Identify a “safe” spot to meet outside the home that everyone knows.

• Know your address and telephone number. Discuss this with kids of all ages so that they’re prepared if they ever need to report something to 911.

• Check smoke detectors. Remember to check all smoke detectors in the house monthly and change out batteries once a year.

• Practice an exit plan. If family members don’t practice they may not know what to do in an emergency. Make sure family members know what to do by practicing your exit plan at least once a year.

• Conduct a home safety survey. Identify any possible fire hazards that may potentially cause a problem.

• Review cooking safety tips. Review cooking safety with anyone in the family who could potentially be operating the stove, microwave or oven.
