School Resource Officers (SROs)

A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a sworn law enforcement officer assigned to work in schools as a visible, approachable, and trusted presence focused on safety, mentorship, and education. The role of an SRO goes beyond enforcement—it is about building positive relationships with students, staff, and families.

The Bismarck Police Department's School Resource Officer (SRO) Program started in 2001 with two officers. They are currently eight SROs assigned to the Bismarck School Program.

SRO's are assigned to a specific school and provide a wide variety of non-traditional police services to community youth, educators, and parents. School Resources Officers build positive rapport among students by being visible and accessible to student bodies, initiating interactions, and servicing as strong role models. The position requires flexibility, time management, multitasking skill and well developed interpersonal and de-escalation skills.
